Everyone loses after Ed Reed deal collapses at Bethune-Cookman University
If we’re being completely honest, Ed Reed coaching the football team at Bethune Cookman University might have been the most high profile positive event in the school modern’s history.
The embattled Daytona Beach institution is a small but mighty and important part of its community. It also made headlines when the student body turned its back on then education commissioner, Betsy DeVos, when they felt her education values didn’t line up with theirs. The founder’s statue stands among other great Americans in Washington.
But here, everyone loses. Ed Reed. BCC. Everybody.
We only know what we’ve been shown. The deal was announced. Reed was critical of the way the school was managed and the deal fell apart.
Now, as it trends #1 in the country for all of the wrong reasons, BCC now has to fight another battle. The school has been in debt. There have been leadership fights. We’re not sure if its ever going to be able to shake off this high profile folly.
Ed Reed. Isn’t completely cleared here either. As great as he was on the football field, he turned his canons on his employer before he could even begin to set his football vision into motion. And he did it on social media. Its unclear what kind of organization would be willing to take a chance on him moving forward.
The students also lose here. Once again watching what should be a fun and proud period of their lives becoming engulfed in scandal. They’re the only ones cleared of fault here.
But the BCC brass. Ed Reed. They all dealt an extremely damaging blow to Bethune-Cookman University and the Daytona Beach community. Everyone should be ashamed.
