Star Trek Picard: Liam Shaw has been right, but we don’t want to admit it

There is a lot going on in Star Trek Picard as we hit our stride in its third and final season. Where to start? Let’s go for the obvious (spoilers ahead).

Jack Crusher. Picard and Beverly’s son (kinda).

Yeah, I know he’s the cool guy. And this paragraph isn’t any kind of indictment of Ed Speelers, who is playing the character very nicely.

But he’s kind of a jerk. He’s kind of a twerp the same way we’ve been spoon fed heir apparents to other heroes like Indiana Jones, Dexter Morgan, or even John McClaine from Die Hard. He’s just plain unlikable. I can’t root for this guy right now.

And it’s because I’m not digging him right now, I’ve been agreeing with Liam Shaw. Who is also quite the jerk.

But I get it. Yeah, he could have been more of a gentleman when Picard and Riker arrived. His treatment of Seven is absolutely unacceptable.

But when it comes to the lives of his crew and the survival of his ship, he’s been right on.

Vadic flexed on him to show him the firepower that the “Shrike” had. She wasn’t playing games. I would have given up Jack in a heartbeat. Who are these dinosaurs who came on to his ship for a fake inspection to push his entire crew into danger.

Make no mistake. Its only because of the hero equity the Next Generation crew has accumulated over the last 30 something years that has made this digestible. And probably because I’m getting older too.

Now our heroes are on the run. And I can’t help but keep asking myself during this entire time..

Is Jack Crusher going to be worth it?
