Quantum Leap: Superman is Addison’s Dad and Martinez sounds like a leaping rival
Quantum Leap was back this week with a high octane Navy leap to 1989, in a show flavored take on The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide, with Ben leaping into the body of a naval officer that has to try to prevent a war with China.
Oh yeah, and Superman is Addison’s dad.
I’m talking about Brandon Routh, who played Superman back in the mid 2000s.
Both Routh and Caitlin Bassett were terrific and the sequences on the ship were excellent. The chase through the decks and the showdown with the Captain were all very well done. The closing conversation between Addison and her father was one of the most powerful moments of the show up to this point. Just great TV.
And whether it was a specifically designed point, or just a coincidence, the show put extra weight on its storytelling continuity.
After all, Addison was supposed to be the original leaper. Not Ben. It only makes sense that she would end up on a ship with her estranged father. I almost wish Addison was there to tell him what she felt personally.
Let’s talk about that closing scene on the deck with Martinez.
“That’s why I’m going to win”.
It almost feels like he’s an ally of some sort but at the same time a rival. Is this some kind of advance government program where there are leapers working on multiple tragedies at the same time? Is this a private company?
If Martinez is a competitive ally, then maybe that’s what future Ian is as well.
It looks like Ben is jumping into the body of a public defender. I don’t think that’s the main case of his next leap but more of an appetitizer.
Excellent episode. I can’t wait until next time.
