Davey and Jonesie’s Locker: Premiere gives us “Bill and Ted” vibes

Davey and Jonesie’s Locker premiered on streaming this week, and the story of two high school best friends and outcasts may remind you of another popular mythology that tackles that same dynamic across different concepts of reality.

When Davey and Jonesie get told by their high school principal that they spend too much time together during their studies and are threatened with a transfer apart, they’re forced to join the dance committee. It’s not long before their activist tendencies get them in trouble and they stumble into a portal created by their mad scientist of a teacher that has them leaping across the multiverse.

It’s just the premiere and we have a long way to go this season, but my first thought is Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, which if you haven’t seen, stars two best buddies who are spaced out rockers charged with creating a better civilization for mankind. Their most recent outing “Bill and Ted Face The Music” was a pandemic film that took place almost three decades after their last film.

Davey and Jonesie’s Locker isn’t a rip off or anything like that, and they do manage to introduce a load of characters during the first episode that could lead us into several different directions.

But instead of a phone booth, we get a locker. And while it’s still unclear if they’ll end up playing “Battleship” with the Grim Reaper, Davey and Jonesie have a tall task trying to find make their own space in the buddy duo space while trying to dodge comparisons to the Wyld Stallyns.

Let’s see where it goes.
