Getting Into Politics: Talking to angry voters

It will happen. It’s not if. It’s when.

And it’s happened to everyone from the first day door knocker to the President of the United States.

You knock on a door and the person who answers it isn’t happy to see you. And they might act a number of different ways.

They may be short with you.

They man not be short with you and began to insult you and your candidate.

They may slam to door in your face.

And yeah, it stinks. But it is the reality of grassroots politics. You knock on enough doors and it will happen.

So, what do you do about it?

First, you go into listening mode. You’re still there to learn. Why are they mad? Write it down.

Next, you may slowly introduce something where you may find middle ground. It doesn’t always feel like it’s there but it is. This is where its handy to know each angle of your candidate’s platform. It can be anything from a complicated policy bullet to simply both being parents, or alumni from the same school. Just find something. Get your data and thank them for their time.

If they completely blow you out, simply be respectable and wish them a good day. Don’t return the anger. Don’t give them the satisfaction. Let them think about the way they acted. I can tell you that if they were completely out of order, they usually feel bad down the line.

Either way, don’t let it get you down.

That bears repeating. Don’t let that angry door make you angry.

Because it doesn’t matter if you get an angry voters who curses you out, or a kind and generous voter who wants to marry you into the family (the nice ones exist too by the way)…

The only door that matters is the next one.
