Getting Into Politics: Knocking on Apartment Complex Doors
Okay, let’s talk about one of the more controversial and consequential aspects of door to door grassroots politics. Every campaign you work on may have a different opinion on this, so be flexible but also be mindful.
I’m talking about going door to door for your candidate in apartment complexes.
You’re probably thinking “Goodness, Frank, I thought we were going to talk about something edgy”.
Well 1) Read the title 2) it actually is when you think about how it effects your campaign.
Here is the thing with apartment complexes. You’re usually not allowed to knock on doors on their property. You can start hitting doors in an apartment complex but don’t be surprised if the golf cart mafia comes after you and asks you to leave.
And if they ask you to leave, you should or else they’re going to call the cops.
Now, the problem here is that a lot of campaigns will want you to hit apartments to see what happens. Why? Because there are a lot of voters living in apartment complexes and they can save a lot of money if they come across an apartment complex that is cool with knocking on doors. That occasionally happens too.

But here is the thing. Much like “No solicitation” signs (story HERE) there are voters who have expectations from the people knocking on their doors. People in apartment complexes might not be used to having campaigns reach them that way. You might lose support.
If a campaign asks you to hit apartment complexes, ask them what they’ll want if you get some resistance. And if you’re uncomfortable, then don’t do it. You’re not getting paid to do this. Follow your instincts.
Good luck.
