Mall Cop Confessions: The art of the tenant store walk through

For entertainment purposes

As a security officer, you are not only paid to observe and report, but you’re also hired to be a crime deterrent. If someone is thinking about doing something stupid, they’ll see you and understand that there will be someone there to document what they do and tell the police.

If you work with your clients, you can be proactive and prevent anything bad from occurring. One tactic is called a walk-through.

This is when a tenant calls you and requests that you hang out at their store. This could be because there is someone suspicious hanging out in their space.

After taking the call, make your way to the space and make your entrance. Go up and talk to your client and start observing everything around you. If you see the suspicious person, see what they do. Get a rock solid description. Spend as much time as you believe to be appropriate, and go on with your shift.

If your presence doesn’t deter the subject and they’re being disruptive, approach them and remind them of the rules. If they refuse to comply then you can move forward with whatever steps are allowed to by your employer and client.

You don’t need a call from a tenant to do a walk through. I always try to incorporate a few into my shift. This switches up your routine and keeps everyone guessing. And it’s also a great way to build up a relationship with your tenants.

Walk-throughs work. They keep everyone on their toes and can be a powerful deterrent that tells the bad guys that this is your mall and you’re always watching.
