My Lady Jane: “The Great” with shapeshifters makes a wild first impression

My Lady Jane dropped on Prime Video this week, and boy, does it throw a lot at viewers.

This show is definitely tapped into the same spirit that made “The Great” so errr great. If you’ve found this post, then there is an excellent chance that you were a fan of the awesome Hulu series starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, with the former play Catherine The Great in a period piece that rewrites history, with a payload of modern trends and styles that made it adored by fans and critics alike.

My Lady Jane said “Let’s do that. But with shapeshifters too.”

Indeed the story revolves around Lady Jane, who like Catherine The Great is an independent feminist who favors books over ceremony and arranged marriages. Emily Bader is playing the title role here. And “Extraordinary” fans like myself will be delighted to see Mairead Tyers playing her best friend (although I still want my season 3 of Extraordinary Ms. Tyers).

Jane is caught in a conspiracy to kill her cousin, the sitting king, which is taking place in a feud between members of his court and Ethians, who are humans that change into animals.

Did you get all of that? It’s a lot.

But the premiere of My Lady Jane works. It borrows heavily from The Great but given how much I miss that show, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Especially, how abruptly that program left us after it brought this modern retro storytelling style we’ve enjoyed since Heath Ledger’s Knight’s tale.

Let’s see where it goes.
