The Boys: Let’s talk about “Butterfly” and “Steal My Sunshine”
While there is no shortage of things to discuss in episode 7 of season 4 of The Boys titled “The Insider”, I want to talk about music.
You see, both Samir, the scientist cooking up the virus to kill Homelander, and I both share an appreciation for 90s music. The best decade for music.
While Frenchie and many others don’t appreciate it, they both have relevance, either with current events or with scenes in other popular media.
Let’s talk about “Butterfly” by Crazy Town. This song has actually been in the headlines here in 2024, a quarter century after it came out because Crazy Town front man, Shifty Shellshock passed away recently. Sadly, it was because of a combination of drugs leading to an overdose. This is the track Frenchie puts on for Samir when he begins his work.

The second song is “Steal My Sunshine” from LEN. And I’m sure you remember this one because, it’s the soundtrack for Frenchie cutting off Kimiko’s leg after Samir injects her with the virus to escape. The track was actually on the “Go” soundtrack. The 1999 film which starred Katie Holmes and Timothy Olyphant. It was considered something of a “Pulp Fiction” light because the stories (which also take place around Christmas time) are all woven together.
Both songs were integrated here nicely.
And can we take a moment to talk about Tilda Swinton as the octopus this week? She was acting like she was rushing for another Oscar during her break up scene with The Deep here. She doesn’t take any days off.
What did you think of this week’s episode? Let me know in the comments.
