Shrinking: Season 2 is off to a strong start, except for these two things

Goodness, it’s great to have “Shrinking” back. While I’ve been a Harrison Ford fan my entire life, even I was surprised at just how good season one was.

Let’s talk about season two which dropped this week on Apple TV with it’s first two episodes.

We’ll start with what I’m enjoying:

The return of Liz (and the laser pointer) with Derek: Both Christa Miller and Ted McGinley have been great for decades, but Liz got me laughing again right away with the laser pointer and her rocks. Derek on the balcony was another high point. These two could probably carry a show themselves.

Putting Paul and Sean together for a spell: This was a good switch up. The best casts can work together in any combination, and both Paul and Sean can be stubborn, which led to some tension before what turned out to be a solid start for their relationship.

And how about Brian and Grace?: Brian got more laughs from me during these first two episodes than all of last season. That’s not to say he wasn’t a good character, but writers are picking his moments very nicely. I’m a Saturday Night Live fan, and Heidi Gardner is one of my favorites on that cast. Happy to see Grace back.

What needs work:

Jimmy and Gaby: They’re out of gas. I wasn’t a fan of their relationship to begin with. Love them both a lot. Just separately.

“Double D”: Yeah, I know there is a Ted Lasso forgiveness lesson coming. But waging war on the soccer pitch is one thing. Getting drunk and killing my wife is another. Some atrocities don’t deserve forgiveness. This is going to be a very, very steep climb.
