“Jingle All The Way” is on Prime Video and still only entertains for the sake of nostalgia

Back in 1996, I was pretty hyped for “Jingle All The Way”. Sinbad was at the top of his game, and my favorite comic at the time. And Arnold Schwarzenegger finally seemed to be back on his game after that “Junior” disaster with “Eraser”. And this comedy was perfect for the “Tickle Me Elmo” holiday season.

Unfortunately, it just wasn’t any good. But so many years later, as the movie arrives on Prime Video in time for the holiday season, there is a purpose for this misfire in the way that it provides some nice mid 90s nostalgia.

Watching it now, I’ve come to realize that we may have been given all of the best physical comedy stuff in the trailers and marketing. This is why the experience was so underwhelming in the theater. Okay. We’ve got the Terminator and Sinbad trying to outwit each other for the toy of the season to make their kids happy, but what else is there? The answer is not much.

If you happen to flip the movie on now, you will see some a good piece of time capsule cinema. Phil Hartman and Martin Mull are here and both greats are no longer with us. We also get Jake Lloyd before Star Wars would change his life forever. “Jingle All The Way” is still a sweet story for the most part, it just never rose to the expectations that were attached to it when it came out.

Maybe with a blank slate, as a stand alone holiday watch, that may be different.
