The Waterfront: S1E4 “You Can’t Trust A Buckley” Recap

That last episode of “The Waterfront” may have left us all with some chest pains or a sore throat. You can read that recap HERE. Otherwise, here we go!

What happened on “You Can’t Trust A Buckley”?: We begin with Belle rushing to check on Harlan after he killed Porter in a fight in the garage. The two place Porter under the jacked up car and then lower it on him to make it look like an accident.

At the memorial, Harlan tells Stevie he’d like to meet Grady. And because of the death, Belle and Shawn have to punt on telling Harlan he’s his son. And that’s not all, Belle gets cold feet about the land deal after hooking up with Wes.

The sheriff’s death has bought Marcus more time to investigate the Buckleys but the family has a great relationship with Drew Jr. the new sheriff. Cane is preoccupied about everything playing out in front of him and snubs his wife’s advances.

We then meet Emmett, who has a relationship with the family but we’re not told who he is. And then out of nowhere, Peyton threatens Jenna that she’ll go after her if she tries to seduce Cane.

We learn that Emmett Parker is an old business associate of Harlan and Cane’s grandfather. He leaves Cane his phone number and an invitation to do business.

A short time later, Cane spots Sanchez heading on to a boat. Marcus believes the sheriff was murdered. Bree won’t believe Cane is a killer. But Cane sees his sister lovingly put her hand on Marcus’ face and knows the two are close.

Harlan tells Belle that he’ll stop running drugs if she wants. But Belle believes a couple of more runs will get them out of trouble. We see them intimate for the first time in the series.

Cane confronts Bree about Marcus and we learn that Bree is looking for revenge for Cane’s testimony in court declaring her an unfit mother. She then hits Cane with some ceramic object that shatters. Cane directs her to end things with Marcus.

Harlan then heads to the bar and tells Shawn that Belle told him he was his son. The two have what seems like a pleasant conversation. Harlan speaks well of Shawn’s mom despite their mutual regrets of an affair.

The next morning Peyton demands answers from Cane. Cane doesn’t provide them and she leaves him. Belle approaches Bree during her morning AA prayer but Bree gets frustrated when she doesn’t get her spot back in the family business.

Harlan does give his new found son a chance to stay and learn the business. This before Cane meets with Wes and Wes tip toes around the affair but leaves the door open for a deal to take place.

Stevie approaches Harlan at the fishery and says Grady wants to meet. When we meet Grady, he’s overly friendly and praises Buckley several times before he takes him on a tour of his property.

Cane goes to visit Jenna. Her marriage is going poorly too. He tries to kiss her but she refuses him. Bree goes to try to break things off with Marcus but he’s got some clues linking the family to Porter’s death to his father and brother.

Grady takes Harlan to his drug house and future poppy feeds. The two strike a deal but not before Grady narcs on Stevie for saying “You Can’t Trust A Buckley” and believing he should take over for Porter. And adds that people should know he killed Porter.

Harlan tries to spare Stevie’s life but he runs. Then Grady’s guys pull out a *bleeping* rail fun and mow him down as Grady laughs and the credits pop.

Quotes:

Bree (to Peyton about her brother): “You could have done so much better.”

Bree: “I was declared an unfit mother because of your testimony.”
Cane: “You were declared an unfit mother because you burned a house with your son in it.”

Cane (to Peyton trying to reconnect with him) “So what? Like a hand *ob at a funeral was your way of connecting with me?”

Grady (after having Stevie killed with a bleeping rail gun): “Let’s have fun. Alright?!”

Trivia and Observations:

Cane turning down intimacy with a wife like Peyton is soap opera science fiction. And then going straight gangster on Jenna is some unpredictable writing.

Belle must have really not enjoyed Wes’ company if she refuses to go through with the land deal and would rather her husband keep running drugs.

The Harlan and Shawn scene was well done. It had emotion but not didn’t get too sappy. It felt true to both of the characters as we know them now.

Yeah, that’s Topher Grace from “That 70s Show”. This blog is published in Wisconsin. He’s come a long way from the Foreman family. Love this character because there is still some Eric in there too.
