Green Bay Heatwave Is Tough Even For Me, Here Is Why That Matters

It has been a very hot weekend in Northeast Wisconsin, with highs in the mid 90s and a heat index of over a 100 here in Green Bay.

“Goodness, Frank. Could you pick a more boring topic? And why does it matter what you think?”

I’ll answer the questions I made up.

Yes. Don’t make me get into my political/government bag and explain a fertilizer ordinances.

And it matters because I grew up in Florida. We get this weather well into the winter months where snow has already fallen here.

To tell you the truth, this heatwave has got me struggling too. Here are some things I have to remember on why it’s just as tough up here.

Heat just isn’t our thing: The world knows us for the cold. And that isn’t hype if you’ve lived through multiple days of sub zero temps here in the area. There simply isn’t a reason to invest in comprehensive air conditioning systems for occasional heat waves.

Older buildings are brick ovens: Yep. We’re all brick oven pizzas this weekend. The further down south you go, the more open the architecture gets. Screen porches. Central AC. Swimming pools in every other house. Northern communities are far more established and built to last.

Humidity is the real enemy and we’re getting tropical amounts of it: The word “tropical” makes me sweat because that’s the climate of some of the areas in the south. And tropical weather includes a great deal of humidity.

If you randomly dropped me in some random area on a trail and I woke up and felt the current conditions. I would actually think I’m in Florida.

But what is enjoyable is watching my neighbors enjoy the summer. Green Bay residents are still having a great time. And only the Midwest can take these miserable conditions and turn it into a party.
