The Waterfront: S1E5 “I’m A Hugger” Recap

Well, the arrival of Topher Grace’s Grady sure shook things up nicely last episode. If you’d like to read a recap of “You Can’t Trust A Buckley” you can do so HERE.

What Happened on “I’m A Hugger”: The Grady and Buckley agreement is buzzing along with Harlan running more runs that previous believed. Harlan ignores Cane when asked about the increase.

Marcus goes to the Porter’s murder scene and finds a surveillance camera before the title card shows up.

We catch up with the family with Shawn formally meeting his half siblings. Cane doesn’t believe him. Bree is cynical but friendlier. The two question Shawn’s true intentions.

Then Marcus shows up and wants to talk to Harlan. Cane slams Bree for not being able to get rid of him. Marcus has footage of Harlan and Belle arriving at Porter’s house and Belle throwing dirty rags into her vehicle. Marcus says that if Harlan hands over Grady the footage will go away. He gives him until the next day to make a decision.

Meanwhile, Grady comes in on his own boat and meets that little brat Diller, who is cleaning up on the dock. This as Marcus tells Bree to get out of the way of his investigation of her father and Harlan and Belle consider up a cover story and momentarily consider giving Marcus Grady to save the family. Cane blows up on Bree over Marcus threatening to destroy the family.

Diller is giving Grady a tour when Cane sees him. He meets Grady for the first time who tells him “I’m a hugger”. Grady says Cane could be a model and asks him to take him to Harlan at the restaurant. Diller catches him mom crying but she walks away in tears.

Grady gets settled in the restaurant. Shawn makes a quick appeal to Cane while making them drinks, and Cane is slightly receptive. Harlan and Belle join them. Grady tries to hug Belle but is rejected for the first time in a humorous exchange. The Buckleys stand firm that they can’t do business out in the open. Grady tells Harlan to come with him and they depart and Cane shouts at his mom for leaving them with Grady now that the land deal is dead.

Diller sees his mom crying on the dock and keeps walking. But he’s caught by his dad who orders him to stop working at the fisherie immediately.

When Grady and Harlan arrive in the woods, they find Drew Jr, the new sheriff bloodied. Drew tells Harlan he never had a choice in being a part of this.

Cane goes to the bank and discovers that Wes is trying to make the land deal go through by buying all of the Buckely’s debt.

Back in the woods, Drew pledges fealty to Grady but lets it slip that the DEA is sniffing around. Harlan has him take a bribe in front of Grady to cement his loyalty.

Back at the restaurant, Cane lectures his mom about her dealings with Wes, and finds Shawn waiting outside of his office afterwards. Shawn tries to appeal to his half brother but makes no progress and leaves.

When Sanchez gets back to his hotel room, he finds Bree off of the wagon and drunk on his bed and with a couple of baggies of drugs. He’s tempted and begins making out with her.

At the dock, Grady tells Harlan that the DEA “sitch” needs to be handled. Cane watches his dad go to his office and grab a gun with the intent of hunting Marcus.

When Cane arrives at the hotel, Harlan is there and Marcus has a needle injected in him. They try to find the trail cam footage but are unsuccessful. They think maybe Marcus’ dealer took the footage.

Cane immediately calls Bree, but we find her stumbling roadside in the rain before she collapses. Cane finds his sister and the trail cam. She mumbles “I did it. I killed him.” as he carries her to his truck.

Trivia And Observations:

It’s weird that Porter is cremated and gone but they haven’t cleaned up that murder scene.

Yeah. Still not a Diller fan. Who lets their mom cry like that? And you can blame him for his mother’s relapse and Sanchez’s murder.

Topher Grace has brought some much needed menacing enthusiasm here. Great addition.

Cane not pouring Shawn a shot of Jameson in his office speaks volumes.

Quotes:

Cane (to Harlan after discovering Shawn is his brother): “So dad, you’ve been cheating on mom our entire lives. Should we be expecting anymore siblings to show up?”
Harlan: “I’ll keep you posted.”
Belle: “Don’t be an a**”

Bree: (to Shawn) “Did I hit on you?
Shawn: “A little”
Belle: “Jesus Christ, Bree.”

Grady (to Diller): “Thanks for the tour Big D.”

Cane (to Belle): I don’t care that you and dad have a toxic marriage. You’re cheating on each other. You got secret kids. Whatever. I don’t care. I don’t have time.”
