The Waterfront: S1E6 “Hunting Season” Recap

We’re cruising along with “The Waterfront” and we’re six episodes in already. We pick up this time after Belle killed her lover, Marcus, to protect her family from the DEA.

What happened on “Hunting Season”?: We begin with a flashback of young Bree has she witnesses what we believe to be the death of her grandfather. She awakes with Cane next to her and hurls.

Harlan arrives at the fishery to find Grady seated behind his desk. Grady has a rush shipment that needs to go out immediately, which angers Harlan. Grady believes they need to bond more and proposes quail hunting. Harlan still refuses and Grady gets more stink from Belle on his way out.

At Cane’s place, Bree mourns Marcus. Cane covered everything up. But then we see Grady approach Diller and the two go on an excursion.

Back at the office, Harlan is feeling good getting payment from Grady. Belle is skeptical and hides the bank troubles from him. Just then, Grady calls them from the hunting trail with Diller.

We then get another flashback of Bree. This time she tells her brother the truth about her grandfather’s death after an attack from two men.

Back at the restaurant, the bank delivers legal documents to Belle and she tells Shawn its bad news.

Harlan heads out to the hunting ground to get his grandson back just in time to hear Grady shooting at the sky and falling down. The three ultimately decides to make a trip out of it, and while Diller is fetching quail, Grady and Harlan have a tense talk about their workflow.

Belle and Wes meet over the foreclosure papers that have been filed. The Buckley’s have a deadline to meet or they will lose everything. Cane and Bree discuss Peyton and life back at his house.

At the hunting trip, it seems like Harlan and Grady are finally starting to find some middle ground, but then Grady mistakenly shoots Diller. The family rushes to the hospital, but it turns out to just be a graze. The problem is that Diller’s dad shows up too.

Belle urges Harlan to push Grady out. Harlan deflects but then Belle gives him the foreclosure papers before leaving him. Bree brushes off Scott and Georgina before running into Belle, who immediately knows her daughter is using before leaving the ER.

In the parking lot, Belle runs into Grady and he hints it may not have been an accident. She gives him a bloody nose but right before he hits her back, Shawn tackles him. He then (checks notes) roundhouse kicks and judo throws Grady’s minion before security breaks it up. He confesses he used to get bullied for being gray in south Texas and learned to fight. They get in a mini fight about the family history before Belle offers to fix him up and explain.

Cane goes to visit Jenna and they hook up. It was a short scene.

Buckley begins reading the foreclosure papers back at the fishery before hearing a noise. When he goes downstairs he’s ambushed by Grady and his men. Grady begins laying Portugese Man O’ War on Harlan’s chest and tells him to cooperate or he’ll hurt his family. Harlan screams as the credits pop.

Trivia and Observations:

Maybe because its Maria Bello and Topher Grace but the Belle disrespect of Grady is one of my favorite dynamics of the show.

Bree needs a win. Melissa Benoist can act. We know that. But just like Supergirl projected positivity, Bree is a stream of sadness. Crappy ex. Crappier kid. Dead lover. Addiction. Traumatic past. Give me something to be happy about.

Grady’s Land Rover Defender is a beast, bro. Great car.

Until Bree mentioned Peyton, I forgot about her. Jenna too.

Grady shooting Diller got an audible “F Bomb” out of me.

Betsy Graver can pull some anger out of you for sure. Georgina is infuriating with just moments on screen. Kudos to her. That’s skill.

Shawn following around Belle, the only immediate Buckley member he doesn’t share blood with is both funny and endearing.

Grady for real brought flowers and balloons. LOL.

Quotes:

Belle: “Grady shot our grandson”

Grady (after Belle hit him): “You hit me!”

Shawn (to Belle): “The first thing you asked me was if I was in the DEA. Why would you ask that?”

Grady: “Someone got shot. Now everything is apparently my fault.”

Grady: “So, I’m out yachting in my yacht, like a G'”
