Gen V: Why “The Boys” Spin-Off Was Cancelled After 2 Seasons

Amazon and “The Boys” showrunners announced that the antics at Goldolkin University aka “GOD U” would not be returning for a third season. Gen V has been cancelled on Prime Video.

When a show that I watched is cancelled, I take inventory of how I’m feeling.

And I can tell you that I’m not disappointed nor really shocked. And the reason why is the reason why I don’t think the show ever took off.

I didn’t care about any of the characters. It’s really true.

Who was there really to root for?

Marie was just okay. Her powers were weird. She wasn’t happy at any time during the show’s short run. It was joyless.

Emma was a fun character. But Sam held her back.

I was never really clear what exactly Jordan did.

Cate and Sam were mostly villains (although the Cate redemption angle was done nicely)

If I had to rank my favorite characters between The Boys and Gen V, it would all be from the former show.

Now the cast did fine with what they had. They’ve all got futures with hopefully more successful projects. This isn’t on them.

It is on the stories.

Both of the two season long plots felt uneven. While Vought has the ability to snap characters back and forth like rubber bands, there were times when I forgot when our heroes were on the run and when they weren’t.

And we have to talk about integration into the VCU.

It always felt forced.

Homelander dropped in on the S1 finale. Because it felt like a block that needed to be checked.

Starlight showed up in season 2. Because we couldn’t leave the kids behind with the mothership getting ready to land.

Soldier Boy was done right. But he wasn’t really even there.

And you get what I’m going with here.

Hindsight is 20/20 but maybe The Boys should have shipped one of their characters off to Gen V. And they could have led the charge.

We’ll never know.

Oh well. On to The Boys finale. And on to Vought Rising.

Gen V will be something we’ll have to be reminded of in a couple of years.
