On Call: Why having all 3 OD victims survive sends a bad message

While I’m really enjoying On Call on Prime Video (I got about half a dozen other posts on it), I’ve got to levy some criticism of episode 6 of the cop action/drama.

It’s time for some Beats ear buds! Get some on Amazon right NOW!

After a tense standoff with the gangsters beating up Diaz’s brother in jail, and a surprisingly poignant dog vs. car cold open, Harmon and her rookie partner get called to a house party where there are three cases of drug overdoses.

Thanks to Narcam, all three of them survive. Hooray for Narcam, which at this point has saved more people than anything on the show (and also does so in real life).

But boo on the story telling decision to let all three victims live.

This is because drugs really are destroying our communities, and drug dealers are the worst of the worst, profiting off of the destruction of those communities, and the deaths of countless mothers, daughters, husbands, and sons.

When you let all three victims live, you’re sending a message that this is a “Flatliners” stunt where coming back from an OD is extreme sport.

To give “On Call” some slack, the following story of “The Sheriff” who is Harmon’s sister, a cop turned druggie tragedy, does illustrate how illegal substances can destroy a life.

They ultimately take Harmon’s sister, Jen, to a safe house for women which also treats drug abuse. These organizations are real, and have the difficult task of rebuilding these people and preparing them for these drug dealers to approach them again.

But the truth is that there are many dying everyday from these drugs. Any medium that sends out that message to an audience is doing good work.

What did you think of this episode of On Call? Let me know in the comments.
