WWE: Why no one can rally behind Charlotte Flair as a face anymore
You know which return got the biggest pop during the Women’s Royal Rumble last weekend?
It was Alexa Bliss. Someone who has been gone for ages, but had won over enough fans to earn that kind of applause after being gone so long.
Unfortunately, after weeks of hype, Charlotte Flair, didn’t get as much noise when she returned and actually won the match. Even though she was also gone for a long time, the videos and hype made it all too predictable.
And when she turned out on RAW last night, while giving a face promo, she was booed.
Charlotte Flair is probably the best female wrestler in the world. Why does she never get over as the hero?
It’s because she never earned the affection of the fans.
“The Queen”, whether it was through character work as an elitist, or as the heir to wrestling royalty, is detached from the fans. She’s operated through the philosophy that the queen never mingles with us “the peasants”.
She’s easily the least adored of the Four Horsewomen.
Bayley has always been a “wrestler of the people”. Even when she’s heel, she’s bringing the fans into her headspace and having fun with us.
Becky Lynch, won us over as a sweetheart, and then fans demanded a platform for her when she wasn’t being treated fairly, giving us “The Man” in return.
Mercedes earned the respect of the fans by doing her best work during matches she would lose most of the time. She put others over on the grandest stages in existence.
Charlotte Flair has never done any of those things.
And all of this is terrible because she’s also going through a divorce. She’s also never really actually done anything to deserve the hate.
Unfortunately, she also never did anything to prevent it either.
