Lopez vs. Lopez: Why Carlos the Curandero and Grandma Dolores looked familiar
Lopez vs. Lopez keeps winning even though it shouldn’t. It brought out the OG George Lopez crew for the Christmas episode, and then two more legends for it’s return from winter break this week.
First. Why you’re likely here.
The supernatural episode involved two acting and pop culture legends.
Carlos the Curandero was played by Cheech Marin of “Cheech and Chong” fame. One of the two original stoners was called in to explore the supernatural events in the Lopez home, and he would later appear as a casino janitor in the episode.
And of course, you may have recognized Rita Moreno, the original Maria from the original West Side Story. Moreno has been active in recent years both as a regular in “One Day at a Time” and also appearing in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. She was terrific in both of those, and she was great here too.
You might also wonder what “chancla” is. Besides being a staple in Lopez’s comedy, its also a sandal that Hispanic families hit their relatives with when we misbehave. I have personally been hit by a chancla many times.
Then we had Quentin calling his son “gordo” which means fat, but is also a term of endearment for some family members.
I had fun this week. More so than the script, it’s been interesting to see how the Lopez’s manage to entertain us while negotiating their often corny comedy. This continues to be done through the quirky supporting cast, and with creative ways to keep us guessing what will happen next in the often consequence-less plot.
I’ll be back next week and I hope you will be too.
