Night Court: Dan’s perspective diffused a potentially divisive episode
This week, Night Court gave us our first courtroom gimmick episode, with a few kids derailing Judge Abby Stone’s court to protect a Tik Tok Influencer who used a toilet to vandalized a statue of Christoper Columbus.
Before we get into that though, I want to talk about Dan Fielding’s view on the night’s events. Specifically, the scene in Abby’s office.
“Of the things I’ve seen in this court this does’t even break the top 20. There are no bombs. There are no hostages. No disgruntled warlocks. This is a snooze.”
That is profound. And to any viewers that are looking for an excuse to dismiss the “newboot” it brought things down to earth (story HERE). This was not a world changing demonstration designed to bring down the justice system. It was kids.
There were a few times that I asked myself “What would Harry do?” in this situation. And I think I’ve come up with the answer.
He would have went to the cafeteria, read the newspaper, made a couple of jokes and then things would have resolved themselves exactly the way they did here. There was nothing Abby was going to do here. Everything ultimately was inconsequential and we had a happy ending. These were children.
Let’s talk about Abby. I want to see Abby doing more bad magic. That was a sweet homage. More of that, please.
There was also no mention of Rand. That train is coming.
And speaking of trains, we might get another courtroom gimmick episode next. And we’ve got our first guest stars with championship figure skaters, Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir. Mel Torme vibes here. Bring it on.
I’ll see you then.
