Smoke: Shocking E2 Finish Points To Gudsen As Mystery Arsonist
Smoke certainly left an impression on its viewers with a finish to episode two that indicates one of our two heroes might in fact also be one of our two villains.
In the final moments we see Dave Gudsen fake limping out of a store that has just been set on fire, wearing a hoodie, sunglasses, and a big smile that leaves little doubt that he’s the arsonist.
And the show only gave viewers a couple of minutes to consider the fact he could be the villain.
Dave snaps at home after receiving a rejection notice on his manuscript and getting cursed at by his stepson after some bad news from Ashley’s first husband. It comes on very subtly, with Taron Egerton showing us why he’s going to keep doing this for a very long time, with Dave trying his hardest to keep his smiling and vibrant personality in control. He finally snaps in the kitchen terrifying Ashley and Emmett.
Meanwhile, after Michelle did some rule breaking of her own, breaking into Arch’s trailer without a warrant, only to discover he wasn’t the arsonist but a militant with his own armory and sexual torture chamber. He shoots him twice after being discovered, sparing his life, and building probable cause by throwing some illegal firearms in the bed of his truck. She only hints at Gudsen being the bad guy at the end of her celebration, with a mix of uncertainty and sadness.
Great episode. It’s keeping the “Seven” vibes with a beautifully shot bunker sequence. Jurnee Smollett has done action before but she’s great here.
