Countdown: S1E3 “Happy Birthday Final” Recap and Review

Prime Video sure knows how to do a three episode opening drop really well. We’ve seen it with The Boys and a couple of others, and they left us with solid episode three that will keep me on for the rest of the season.

“Happy Birthday Final” is a play on the fact that it’s Finau’s birthday and they misspelled his cake (he’s also no doubt missed his birthday dinner with the family) but the meat of the episode revolved around Meachum breaking out an old crime contact in Novocic in an effort to get close to Volchek. This begins with a fake escape during a prisoner transport, which was pretty entertaining as Finau and Oliveras had to play along with Meachum to make it look convincing. Back at the office DA Valwell threatens Blythe with removal, but not without a hero speech from Drew sticking up to his mentor. Vocic takes Meachum to a family dance hall where he ends up in the same room with Volchek but can’t the convince the family to keep him alive. The team arrives just as Meachum is about to get executed and we get an ace gun fight as Volchek torches his evidence and escapes. At the end of the battle, we discover Drew is badley hurt in a very well done (camera) shot to end the episode.

We’re going in the right direction. We got a cliffhanger regarding Drew, who is just an easy person to root for. Jessica Camacho is playing Oliveras very well as we still can’t be sure whether she’s using drugs again or not, and Ackles is playing Meachum just up to the edge of Soldier Boy to make everybody happy. And I honestly didn’t know Uli Latukefu was 40. Dude did a great job playing Dwayne Johnson a couple of years ago in “Young Rock” which means he was acting almost a decade younger even back then.

Good episode. What did you think? I’ll see you next time
