Netflix: Creative Autopsies On “The Residence” And “Pulse” After Cancellation

Netflix has cancelled both “The Residence” and “Pulse” after one season (story HERE). Both shows had their creative issues, and likely more factors that played a part in their cancellation behind the scenes.

As a Netflix subscriber like many of you, let me explain why I didn’t enjoy these two programs.

The Residence expected us to bow down to Cordelia Cupp with no introduction whatsoever. She rolled into The White House after a murder that took place during a state dinner, and showrunners wanted us to simply adore her from the praise we got from Isiah Whitlock’s character. This was fixable. There were flashbacks with her nephew and sister that made things slightly better, and Uzo Aduba really got cooking at some points. Unfortunately that was in the final two episodes. One, a slog, which ran almost feature length. Not good enough.

And the bird watching is still ridiculously unbearable. Wake me when Benoit Blanc gets back.

Pulse really caught me at a bad time. Myself and really audiences in general, can only do so much medical television at one time. When Pulse joined the fray, I was already watching the slowly improving “Doc” and what will go down as one of the best shows of the year in “The Pitt”. Pulse didn’t get close to any of those creatively, or in the “buzz” department. I can only imagine how you might have felt if you were watching these three shows plus the One Chicago series and Grey’s Anatomy (same company). It was just too much and this was the easy cut.

You never like to see shows cancelled. But “The Residence” and “Pulse” were easy decisions for Netflix.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
