There are three kinds of M. Night Shyamalan movies.

The first are the thrillers with a potent twist. Your “Sixth Sense” or “Unbreakable” outings. He doesn’t hit this note very often anymore because there is just so much other content to dull the sting.

The second are the duds. Your “Happenings” or “Lady in the Water” films that may try to do something daring but don’t get to where they need to be. A couple of them are just bad films.

The third is his more recent strain of films. These are movies that try do something unique but bank on just trying to be entertaining. Your “Split” or even “Old” movies.

The latest film to hit streamers this weekend falls into that final group. “Knock at the Cabin” does enough to stay mysterious and harrowing but does keep the water warm enough to make for a satisfying experience.

We get a home invasion film when a group of attackers lead by Dave Bautista, show up at the home of a same sex couple and their adopted child. They believe that the family must kill one of their own or that the world will end.

The film works well enough to deliver a Shyamalan experience that safely ticks all of the boxes and results in an entertaining sit.

The acting is fine. The movie is well shot. And another recent trend, which is a Shyamalan film that takes no more time than needed allows “Knock at the Cabin” to work.

Because its such a bare bones experience, there isn’t a lot to pick apart critically here. There is a chance that the suspense might miss you or the movie’s ending might not hit you the way it hits others, but that could happen with any of his films really.

I’ll recommend what should be an easy time investment on a streamer you’re already likely paying for.

This should be dropped in the account of good M. Night Shyamalan movies.
