Scrubs: A scene appreciation of the Dr. Cox breakdown from “My Lunch”
We’re going way back today to “Scubs”, which was a spectacular dramedy that perfected the live action cutaway in the 2000s.
It made us laugh for nine seasons across two networks.
But today, we’re going to talk about a time it made us cry. More specifically the episode “My Lunch” from season 5.
If you’re familiar with the show, you know that Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) was one of the best dis artists in TV, not too far behind your Al Bundys and Ari Golds. His insults were mostly aimed at JD. But he also loved his protege played by Zach Braff.

Dr. Cox was the mentoring doctor at Sacred Heart and a damn good one, but his decision to green light a load of bad transplants results in multiple patient deaths.
Set to “How To Save A Life” by the Fray, its one of the most powerful scenes on the show.
Take a look..
That still stings like hell. I’ll only watch it once or twice a year.
In addition to Cox’s completely never seen before sadness, we also have Carla (Judy Reyes) doing some great work without any lines.
I won’t spoil the following “My Fallen Idol” resolution but in a show that made you laugh countless times, its this painful moment that stays with you.
It also wasn’t the first time we heard “How To Save A Life”. Grey’s Anatomy would champion the song during its own early run, and you could argue that behind “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, its one of their most notable songs. That Fray album is spectacular.
If you haven’t watch Scrubs before, you should. I promise, you’ll feel much better after almost every episode despite this powerful piece of sadness provoking show making.
And you’ll also get to see real life friends, Braff and Donald Faison doing some of their funniest work outside of T-Mobile commercials.
