Blockbuster: It’s a miracle that this show is a disappointment

“Blockbuster”, the latest sitcom series on streaming that chronicles the adventures of a team working in the last Blockbuster Video store on earth, should be funny. In fact, it had me questioning a lot.

Why is Blockbuster not any good? This cast is amazing.

Russell Park (Fresh Off The Boat) is funny.
Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn 99) is funny.
JB “freaking” Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) is damn funny.

So why isn’t Blockbuster funny?

It pains me to write this mediocre review because the show is trying its best to be funny. But it doesn’t work most of the time.

The jokes aren’t funny. The storylines don’t make us care. And the entire universe of the show is too small.

This leads to an underwhelming TV experience. We should be able to pop these episodes like candy, but each one lumbers along with an unsatisfying payoff.

And this stuff has worked before. “The Office”, “Scrubs”, “Cheers”, all take place in essentially one environment with a gifted cast, and all are legendary.

Yes, there is even a play at a romance and that doesn’t work here either.

Sadly, this is one of those negative reviews I wish I didn’t have to write. It would have been great to praise this extremely talented cast in an environment where I spent half my childhood. My love of movies grew in a Blockbuster in the Rosemont neighborhood of Orlando.

But that won’t happen here, and if you skip “Blockbuster” you won’t be missing anything.

And that is a really big shame. Lets hope that if we get more episodes of “Blockbuster” that it finds its way, because I really want to root for this program.
