Pennyworth: Show never got handled very well by streamers

Pennyworth has been cancelled by HBO. And its both warranted, and another strike against networks that don’t know how to properly handle material with solid potential.

The show starring Jack Bannon, as Alfred Pennyworth before Batman, had some really solid episodes and action sequences. This was the kind of Alfred people found themselves asking for after we got our first look at a more capable “Bat-Butler” in “Gotham” which had a good run on FOX.

But the first strike was Pennyworth landing on Epix. Sorry, but no one is watching Epix. And when it finally got around to HBO, the suits decided that they had to throw on the suffix “The origin of Batman’s Butler” which really wasn’t very good.

And when everything had finally gotten sorted, even I didn’t have time to go burrowing through the catalog looking for it.

Now. As we sit in a market flooded by every kind of caped crusader material we can think of, they’ve finally called it quits on this one.

Oh, Alfred himself will no doubt be back. James Gunn will have to decided what kind of Alfred he wants to sit alongside Matt Reeves’ Andy Serkis.

But good run, Jack Bannon. You did the best you could, and so did Emma Paetz, Ben Aldridge, and especially Paloma Faith.

I wish they could have treated you better.
