Surprise. Quinta Brunson is good at Saturday Night Live.
It shouldn’t be a surprise, The Abbott Elementary mastermind is so good on her own turf, it makes sense that she would do well on the legendary comedy show, and she did just that.
But the cold open was another dud, despite a might swing by James Austin Johnson to make the Trump indictment funny. While his impression is still the best there is, it just wasn’t that funny.
Brunson took the stage, and was right at home for her monologue. The cocaine in the bathroom skit was excellent, as was The Bridesmaids docu-short that also made everyone else look good. SNL continued winning with it’s gameshow skits with Brunson and Keenan Thompson playing a couple with some unique fears.
The car skit may have been the best spot of the night. Brunson and Mikey Day knocked it out of the park with some great assists from Chloe Fineman and Ego Nwodim. They complete got me on the last minute twist.
Weekend Update was good. But the April Fool’s Joke on Colin actually went right over my head. The rest of the stuff was also funny with “Short King Spring” and disses on Staten Island. Jost and Che are doing their best stuff this season. Please Don’t Destroy still hasn’t missed with another great short.
Lil Yachty isn’t for me, but I could appreciate the talent and the actual performance which was just epic. SNL can take an artist we might not be familiar with and still present them in the most entertaining way possible. Strong stuff.
A great night for Brunson and the rest of the cast.
Next week brings back SNL favorite Molly Shannon with musical guests Jonas Brothers. Should be a loaded show.
