SNL: Mulaney scores but Byrne and Gyllenhaal steal the show

Saturday Night live was new last night, and while the reliable John Mulaney was good, it was a throwback musical guest and a drop in from an A-lister that stole the show.

The cold open featured a Mike Pence Cornavirus presser getting interrupted by Democratic presidential hopefuls, featuring Larry David’s Bernie Sanders, and Rachel Dratch’s Amy Klobuchar. Mulaney took the rotating Joe Biden duties, complete with a South Carolina sash from the former veep’s victory just hours early.

Mulaney’s high points included his regular stand up monologue, a skit where he played an uncle shamed and memed on social media, and another musical number on his watch, this time at LaGuardia airport.

The social media and sentimental favorite of the evening was a throwback performance of “Once in a Lifetime” by David Byrne, who also jumped in on the airport skit.

SNL has done well with “go to” hosts this season that have had success previously hosting. Adam Driver, Chance the Rapper, and Woody Harrelson have all had strong outings during season 45.

Next week is bound to be another interesting show with Daniel Craig hosting before his final Bond film drops and the Weeknd taking musical duties.
