When you watch enough movies, you can get a pretty accurate pulse of what you’re in store for when you enter the theater or hit “play” on the streamer.
But you never know, which is why you always watch the film. The next surprise is just around the corner.
The latest surprise, which recently arrived on peacock is Megan or M3gan, the story of a android doll that is originally designed to help a grieving child, but eventually turns into an efficient killing machine.
That’s the case here. And almost all of it works.
When Cady’s parents are killed in a gruesome crash, she’s sent to live with her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams) who happens to be a brilliant engineer working at a toy company. Career obsessed Gemma isn’t very good at caring for her niece and builds Megan, who can do everything from reading Cady’s mood to tucking her into bed a night. But Megan becomes a self aware killing machine and Gemma has to stop her before she’s launched as a project to kids around the world.
The film is funny. Its surreal. It even insults the way we take care of our kids. It’s also a very serviceable horror film. You’ll be wondering where Megan gets the nerve to say a lot of the outrageous things she utters in the movie.
If there are some flaws, it could be that director Gerard Johnstone gives his villain a little too much swagger. If that doesn’t bother you, then you’ll enjoy this film. I know I did.
