There are a pair of bills currently making they’re way through the legislative channels in Tallahassee that would expand the use of drones for law enforcement use. The specific purpose stated in the bill would be for gathering traffic information and to monitor groups of larger than 50 people (story HERE).
Bring it on. We must continue to support using technology to aid our law enforcement officers.
Specifically here in Orlando, where our hands are full when it comes to managing growth and an accident on I4 or Colonial Drive can cripple the movement of our commuters.
Yes, there are concerns about privacy, but those concerns shouldn’t be directed at law enforcement, but rather private users who continue to fly their camera equipped aircraft in unauthorized areas despite Orlando’s drone ordinances.
For transparency purposes, the video from these drones should be public record. There hasn’t been a specific case, but eventually there will be a scenario where the media will need to show the footage taken from the sky to the public.
Drones are the latest advancement in technology that allow us to put our “eyes in the sky”. We use them for real estate, surveying, and many other purposes. Before you know it, they’ll be delivering our Amazon packages.
Why not use them to keep our community safe?
The bill passed the House unanimously. The Senate should do likewise. This is providing another valuable resource for our law enforcement officers in Orlando.
