All married couples must eventually deal with the in-laws, but I’d wager none of those in-laws would try to kill the bride on their wedding night in a sick game of Hide and Seek to try to fulfill a demonic ritual. Such is the case in “Ready or Not”, a film that is a lot more fun than it should be.
Samara Weaver (The Babysitter) plays Grace, a grounded, cigarette smoking, bride-to-be, who is marrying into a super wealthy family (lead most notably by Adam Brody and Andie MacDowell). What Grace doesn’t know is that the family made a deal with the devil ages ago, that requires a sacrifice through a game of Hide and Seek. Grace has to survive until dawn while the entire family hunts her down on their large estate.
The film is just wild.
It’s fast moving, filled with a lot of gory surprises that will prevent you from getting anywhere near bored, and there is plenty of painful cringe to keep your nerves sharp. Weaver is terrific and the entire family cast is pretty funny as a group that obviously doesn’t have a lot of experience hunting new family members.
If there are some downsides, it would be that the film is more of a comedy than a horror, and there are some ridiculous turns towards the end of the story that almost goes too far, but Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, hit the breaks just in time. At 95 minutes, it’s exactly the length it has to be.
“Ready or Not” is exactly what it looks like, and the film makes for a wild and enjoyable time.
