On Friday, HBO released it’s trailer for “The Witches”. A remake of the classic story, and borderline terrifying 1990 film starring Anjelica Huston.

Now casting Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Stanley Tucci a step in the right direction. And that’s a good thing.
Because this movie had better be a worthy update of the last one.
We’ve completely run out of ideas and running back reboots and remakes can be painful. It’s also especially annoying when many of these sloppily done do-overs are bad because they just diminish the original material, and remind us of how far away we’re getting from genuine new ways to tell stories.
They need to get this done right.
The Witches is actually Generation X territory and it was a welcomed surprise when it hit theaters thirty years ago. It taught some important lessons and at the same time introduced some genuinely scary villains courtesy of the work of legendary Jim Henson.
Computers might not get it done the way it did back then.
I have faith in Hathaway and Spencer as they both try to bounce back from “The Hustle” and “Ma” respectively and they’ve got Oscar hardware that has earned them a shot at this great material.
Let’s just hope that is a honorable retelling of the original for a whole new generation to enjoy. They owe us that.
And they’d better not forget Bruno.
