Saturday Night Live: John Mulaney will try to bring the funny back to slow starting season

John Mulaney is one of my favorite stand up comedians. Kid Gorgeous at Radio City was a blast from beginning to end, and his older stuff winds up in my feed almost every day. My favorite is his “Something you can’t replace” house party story.

And I’m hoping he can jolt some life into this SNL season that hasn’t seen it’s first really funny moment yet.

Jim Carrey and Alec Baldwin are striking out as Biden and Trump.

Weekend Update hasn’t been funny in a long time.

And the crowd just seems off. It could be the COVID protections the show has understandably taken, but something isn’t right there.

Mulaney has actually hosted a couple of times in previous years, including 2020. Sometimes it’s really funny like “What’s That Name?” with Bill Hader, other times its just a consistent chuckle, but it always makes for good television. His stand up at the beginning of the program always gets things off to a strong start.

And we can’t forget, he’s also a former writer on the show. If he can’t diagnose the problem then I don’t know what we’re going to do.

We’ll also have The Strokes as musical guests. They’ve got some great stuff for an SNL crowd.

So, it’s really going to be up to the old reliables to get it done this week. Going back to the proven winners works. That’s why they have a five-timers club. While Issa Rae and Adele have been good this year, but its been a slog that has required a lot of their charm to make it happen. I can’t wait for a return to an SNL where I’m just having a good time into Sunday morning.
