My open letter to the Orange County Commission regarding the high rent crisis in Orlando

Below is an email sent to the Mayor of Orange County and members of the County Commission ahead of a discussion regarding the rental crisis that will take place next month.

Dear,

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings
District 1 County Commissioner Nicole Wilson
District 2 County Commissioner Christine Moore
District 3 County Commissioner Mayra Uribe
District 4 County Commissioner Maribel Gomez Cordero
District 5 County Commissioner Emily Bonilla
District 6 County Commissioner Victoria Siplin
Dear Mayor and Commissioners,

My name is Frank Torres, and I’m writing you this afternoon ahead of your April 5th discussion regarding the rent crisis in Orange County.

This is a very personal issue for me. I’ve already lost the housing battle here once. It took a kind group of friends to help me recover, and I’m not sure where I would be without them today. With the existing conditions regarding rent prices in Orlando, my future in the community I’ve lived in since the second grade growing up in the Lockhart community is still uncertain.

The skyrocketing cost of rent affects everyone. It hinders our tourism and hospitality workers that fuel our economy. It hurts our seniors who live on a fixed income. It forces our college students into hardships while trying to build their own future here.

We must implement reforms that will treat our citizens fairly. And we must enact policies that will ensure that the often out of town organizations that exploit our neighbors are being held accountable when necessary, as far as safety in their managed communities.

Let’s work together and find solutions. The futures of many Orange County residents may depend on it.

Respectfully,

Frank Torres
