The best colleges in the country can’t get enough veterans to apply, here is why

Over the past few days, I’ve been fortunate enough to study at one of the finest schools in the country alongside my fellow veterans. A top 1% institution, that sadly isn’t paying me to advertise for them, so you won’t see their name here.

But I’ve spoken to some of their administrators, as well as some other veterans representatives who visit other top flight universities, and they all say the same thing.

They can’t get enough veterans to apply.

Sadly, I wasn’t surprised.

They’re right though. For all of the emphasis we put on military service and education, every veteran should be going to college at the best schools in the world, but the system is letting us down. Let me explain why we’re not getting into the finest colleges in the United States.

College money red tape: Accessing our GI Bill is still too difficult. And at many schools, veterans don’t have a road map to getting into a class room. Where do we start? What do we do?

We’re still not getting transition to civilian life right: Every veterans specialist will tell you that military to civilian transition still isn’t going well. Its been that way for years now. When are we going to do something about it? There are some VA administrators pulling down some good money, who still aren’t making a difference here.

We don’t think we can get in: Notice this blog post says “apply”. This is because schools will commit to having us apply but what guarantees do we have to getting in? This is especially relevant in hyper competitive schools. Let’s nail down some language that will encourage us to step forward. We’ve already done so before.

We still have to pay the bills: We don’t live with our folks anymore. Many of us have families. While it would be the chance of a lifetime to attend a great college, its just not feasible.

My experience at this great school has been awesome. I wish I could stay here. But that reality simply isn’t a pragmatic one in the lives of many veterans.

Until that changes, we’ll continue to miss out on getting an education at the finest institutions in the world.

What are we going to do about it? The schools that are serious about getting more veterans into their classrooms will help us overcome these obstacles. Many which are currently out of our control.
